I recently took a weekend trip to Chicago with my mom and grandma. The main reason we made the trip was to watch my cousin get married (which was wonderful), but we definitely could not miss the opportunity to eat amazing food, visit the Bean and grab some Garrett's popcorn. I wanted to share some of the prettiest, yummiest parts of my quick trip. As always, getting away really refreshed my spirit. What a blessing it is to get to visit different places in our beautiful world.
My flight got in around lunchtime, and there were a few hours to kill before the wedding so my mom and I got lunch at a spot around the corner from our hotel. We got a kick out of the fact that I left Alabama for a barbecue restaurant in Chicago. The restaurant itself is very airy and rustic. I loved it. I also had a really hard time choosing something off the menu because there were so many tasty options like a savory chicken pot pie and a mac and cheese, pulled pork grilled cheese (holy, yum).
I ended up going with the brisket quesadillas, and I was not disappointed. Sweet tangy barbecue sauce, with gooey cheese and fried jalapenos. Savory, spicy and oh so good.
The wedding was so much fun. I got to see family members I haven't seen in years. It was also my first family function where I was old enough to enjoy the open bar, so hallelujah for that. I opted for this French Connection body con with glittery stripes, tights and basic booties.
We went to Fig & Olive for brunch on Sunday morning. I had never been and instantly fell in love with how bright, modern and whimsical the inside of the restaurant is.
I started with a mimosa and got a sangria for my second drink. Both were delicious and refreshing. We also ordered two sets of three different crostinis to share: marinated shrimp, marinated tenderloin and goat cheese. I only ate the shrimp and tenderloin crostinis. I liked them both, but the shrimp was definitely my favorite.
For my entree, I ordered the burger but was sad to be told they were out of it. I ended up ordering the salmon burger instead, though I was initially reluctant about it. Y'all, I fell all the way in love. My past experiences with salmon burgers have been less than stellar. Usually, they're a bit dry and not so flavorful- this one was incredible. The salmon tasted fresh, the burger patty was moist and the truffle fries were to DIE for.
Also, look how cute my Barb and Gran are. Just precious.
The rest of our day was a mixture of rest and exploration. We ended the last night of our trip watching the Housewives and ordering a Giordano's pizza, but before that, we took some time to explore and grab some goodies to take home.
So, both my mom and grandma have been to Chicago a number of times. Which is why I was shocked and appalled when they were both confused when I said I wanted to go see The Bean. Like, how? Apparently, my grandma had seen it in passing and didn't think enough of it to stop. I mean, honestly, how do you see a huge glorious silver bean and not stop and stare? I just don't understand. Any way, please note that Barb and I did The Bean. We selfied in front of The Bean, had a tourist take a picture of us in front of The Bean, walked underneath The Bean and took a reflection selfie in The Bean. Therefore, I can confidently say we conquered The Bean.
I have a not-so-secret love and outright infatuation with donuts and coffee. I follow a Chicago-based blogger named Olivia Rink who posted about this place. So, when I saw it on the way to The Bean, I freaked out and proceeded to drag Barb in on our way back to the hotel. Let's start with how cute it is.
Soooooo much pink. My heart could barely stand it. I was melting with joy. I didn't get any coffee, but we got a half a dozen donuts to take back to share with my grandma. I loved that they had a ton of options, including some that are gluten-free.
My favorite one (they were all yummy) was the white icing with sprinkles. EVERY SINGLE THING.
Of course, we could not leave Chicago without grabbing some Garrett's popcorn to go. I got the classic cheddar and caramel mix. I actually forgot I had packed it in my suitcase, and it was the sweetest surprise to get me out of my post-vacation slump while I was unpacking. My mom ordered Garrett's popcorn every year during the holidays when I was growing up, so it really made me feel all fuzzy and nostalgic inside.
Okay, this is definitely going to always be a part of my travel posts. I collect mugs, y'all. Nothing makes me smile while I'm drinking my morning coffee more than the memories associated with each mug.
This trip was a fresh reminder of why I love Chicago. The fast-paced hustle of a big city makes my heart so happy. The people are friendly, the food is bomb and the style is so good. It was also amazing to see my favorite ladies and watch my cousin marry the love of his life. So much fun. My heart is fluttering just writing this. Happy adventuring!
